Kallumakkaya nirachath \ Stuffed mussels Recipe \Arikadukka

Ingredients needed to make Kallumakkaya nirachath \ Stuffed mussels Recipe 

1.Fresh mussels/kallummakaya - 15 (medium size)


For stuffing

1.Rice flour - 2 cup
2.Dessicated coconut -1/4 cup
3.Shallots/kunjulli - 4 no
4.Fennel seed /perumjeerakam - 1/2 tsp
5.Green chilli - 1 chopped
6.Ginger -a small piece
7.Curry leaves
8.Salt
9.Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp 

For batter

1. Kashmiri chillipowder - 1 tsp
2.Turmeric powder -1/2 tsp
3.Salt
4.Water

How to prepare Kallumakkaya nirachath
1. Clean the outer part of the mussels by scrubbing away all the dirt, if any. Do not use the shells which are opened.
2. Boil the mussels with enough water,till the shells open. Drain it and clean the mussels and keep it aside.
 3.Using a  knife, slowly slide in the knife through the slits and open them slowly without breaking the shells apart.  Once the shell is open, pull out the hairy substance from the flesh. Wash the opened mussels under slow running tap water, rubbing its flesh gently to clean any further dirt.
4. Grind grated coconut, shallots, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, green chillies, ginger, curry leaves.add salt , water,rice powder to it.

5.Mix well and make a smooth dough by adding enough hot water.

6. Take a prepared dough ball and stuff the mussels, repeat the process with all the mussels.


7. Slowly break open the shell and take out the cooked stuffing taking care not to break or part the mussel from the dough. It is usual that the mussel sticking to the shell, you can take them off using a sharp knife in case need be.6. Steam cook the stuffed mussels for 15-20 minutes and keep aside to cool.

8.Make a spicy mixture using red chilli powder, turmeric powder, rice powder and salt.

9. Heat oil in pan, when its hot, dip each stuffed mussel in this spicy mixture and deep fry it.
